Destination(s) : Coimbra Portugal

Coimbra is a historic city and has several famous landmarks of interest to the visitors. The most famous is the old university building where King John III opened one of the first universities in the world.

When visiting the university the main area, know as Paço das Escolas, as a lot of monuments that shouldn't be missed: Sala dos Capelos, a private examination room; the Joanine Library., where you can be dazzled by 200000 books more than 400 years old, and Porta Férrea, a gate built with the intent to honor the entrance into the court of the University that students still respect even today.

The Botanical Garden was founded in the 18-th century and it was integrated in the Natural History Museum. You can choose to come to the Garden if you need some time to relax, because it is a place of tranquility or because it is a romantic place where you can stroll or just sit on the benches. But if you like the flowers and the plants, you should go seeing the over one million different plants species, from all the world. Jardim Botanico is laid out in terraces and besides the visual beauty of the plants, one can feel that he lives in a natural real world, where he can see interesting statues, fountains, a laboratory, a chapel from the 18th century and a library.

Quinta das lágrimas, literally estates of tears, is one of the most romantic places in Portugal where Pedro and Ines use to meet. This story of a prince and a noblewoman with an illicit affair its something like Romeo and Juliet but with royal connection and a ghoulish epilogue. The gardens are gorgeous and there is a luxury four star accommodation.

Coimbra is also the house of a very typical fado. Fado (literally fate) is the most traditional music of Portugal, usually played only by a guitar and a strong male or female voice. It is a street music, associated with pubs and cafes and is renowned for its expressive and profoundly melancholic character. Fado speaks to the often harsh realities of everyday life, sometimes with a sense of resignation, sometimes with the hope of resolution. It is one of the most respected music genre in the world and it has been awarded World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. A visit to one of the countless casas de fado in Coimbra is a must but, if your lucky, you might even listen to it in the streets by the students.
